چکیده

Monte-Carlo path tracing algorithms for computer graphics require that given an incident light ray at a surface an outgoing direction can be computed with a distribution given by the magnitude of the bidirectional reeectance distribution function (BRDF). For analytic reeectance functions this can be done using various techniques including inverting the function, or tabulating some representation of the inverse. However, measured BRDF data sets are too large for this to be practical. We present a method to generate reeection rays distributed according to the magnitude of the BRDF. The method relies on a wavelet-based representation of the BRDF. This representation is eecient and compact, allowing large, anisotropic measured BRDF data sets to be represented with a few thousand coeecients. In particular, we exploit the wavelet representation to quickly compute integrals over ranges of the BRDF.

Filtered Local Shading in the Wavelet

Many global illumination algorithms generate directionally-and positionally-varying radiance data that then need to be somehow re-sampled and used for nal shading. This operation should lter all light over the incident hemisphere through the BRDF to generate an accurate image. This can be done analytically for simple BRDFs, such as Lambertian or Phong-like BRDFs, but becomes more diicult in the...

Real-time Rendering of Acquired BRDF Data Sets

Provided a set of acquired BRDF data, realistic image synthesis requires evaluation of the rendering equatuation over a hemisphere of directions on a surface. We store the basis representation of the BRDF, acquired directly from the sample material, in a pair of three-dimensional textures to offload the work to the GPU. For materials that produce artifacts in the basis representation, we use da...

BRDF Estimation for Faces from a Sparse Dataset Using a Neural Network

We present a novel five source near-infrared photometric stereo 3D face capture device. The accuracy of the system is demonstrated by a comparison with ground truth from a commercial 3D scanner. We also use the data from the five captured images to model the Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) in order to synthesise images from novel lighting directions. A comparison of thes...

Analysis of BRDF and Albedo Properties of Pure and Mixed Surface Types From Terra MISR Using Landsat High-Resolution Land Cover and Angular Unmixing Technique

The bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) determines the degree of anisotropy of the surface’s reflective properties (Nicodemus et al. 1977). This is a basic parameter employed in the vegetation structure retrievals and characterization of surface albedo. An important feature of the BRDF shape is the amplitude and width of the hot spot and dark spot areas in the principal plan...
